CANADIAN FEMALE ARTISTS YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE PT. 2

In honour of Women’s History Month, we are here to share 6 Canadian female artists that are so amazing, powerful and inspiring. We have a part 1 as well if you have not read it yet, make sure you do!
Each artist mentioned in this blog fall under a different genre and they are all unique in their own way. Additionally, we want to share that if you type in “EQUAL” in the search bar on Spotify, there are a bunch of curated playlists that feature amazing women in music. Our favourite playlist is EQUAL Canada.
Laila is a Jordanian-Canadian singer, songwriter and actress from Ottawa, Canada with around 2K listeners on Spotify. She debuted on May 12th, 2023 with the single “Strangers at the Airport”. Followed by her debut, she released “I Like Girls” on June 16th which is her most popular song with around 17.3K streams on Spotify. In July, she released “Sparks”. Our favourite song of hers is “Heart Doesn’t Work Like That” which released on September 15th, 2023.
All of these releases were tracks on her debut EP *My Heart Doesn’t Work Like That* which came out on October 27th, 2023. Laila’s EP is currently her latest release, but hopefully we can hear some more music from her in 2024.
Laila will be performing for Breaking Sound on April 17th at Rivoli in Toronto, so if you can, get tickets and go support her!

Emi Choi is a Korean-Canadian independent singer and songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. She made her debut on March 21st, 2020 with the single “Stranger’s Sweater”. This is her second most popular song with over 2.2 million streams on Spotify alone. Followed by her debut, she released “On Your Mind” on May 29th, 2020. This song has almost 3.4 million streams just on Spotify – making it her most popular song.
Emi did not release any music throughout 2021 and came back in January 2022 with the release of “Melancholy Mood”. In October, she released “One Size”.
In July 2023, she released the single “Sakura” and this is when we started listening to her. Her latest release is from February 9th for the single “Holiday” which is one of our favourite songs by her so far.
On February 16th, Emi Choi headlined in Toronto alongside Jen Moon and WIMY.

Yarah is an R&B singer-songwriter from Toronto with around 19.6K listeners on Spotify. She debuted on April 10th, 2020 with the single “Signs”. Followed by her debut, she released “Like That” in July 2020.
On January 8th, 2021, she released the single “Complicated” which is her most popular song with almost 1.1 million streams on Spotify. She also released “Ur Dumb.” in April 2021 and “In The Morning” in August. Her first release of 2022 was on March 18th for the single “Hold That”. This was a pre-release track for her debut EP Just For Now which came out on March 25th, 2022. Our favourite single on this EP is “With Me”.
Yarah’s latest release is from September 29th, 2023 for the song “Jealous” which is how we discovered her. Hopefully in 2024, we can expect some more music.

Dani Saldo is an Alternative-Pop Filipino-Canadian singer and songwriter based in Guelph, Canada with 200 listeners on Spotify. She debuted on April 21st, 2020 with the single “Friends Don’t”. Followed by her first single, she released “No Strings Attached” on July 31st, 2020. The only single she released in 2021 was “Space” in December.
On April 15th, 2022 she released the single “22” which is her most popular song with a little over 33K streams on Spotify.
Her second most popular song is “Mutual” with 30K streams and it was released on May 26th, 2023. She then released “selfish” in July – which is our favourite song and “i might need u” in September. All three of these singles were pre-release tracks for her debut EP everything i didn’t say which came out on September 5th, 2023.
So far for 2024, she released “lost & found” on January 19th – which is her latest release.

Jade Hilton is a Pop-Country Chinese-Canadian singer and songwriter from Toronto, Canada with 660 monthly listeners on Spotify. She debuted on March 5th, 2018 with the single “This Town” which was in collaboration with Cole Brandt. On November 28th, 2018, she released her first official solo “This Love”.
In 2019, she released one single “Full Ride” in October. On April 1st, 2020, she released the single “I Would” which is the first song we ever heard of hers around 2022. This is one of her most popular songs with around 25K streams on Spotify. Another popular song of hers with 21K streams is “Falling” which came out on November 13th, 2020.
On May 5th, 2021, she released the single “Camden” followed by “Evelyn” in July. Both these singles were pre-release tracks for her debut EP Unrequited which came out on April 8th, 2022. This EP features her most streamed track “Not My Type” which almost has 30K streams. Following the release of her EP, she released one last single in 2022 titled “Deja Vu”.
On June 2nd, 2023, she released “Daydream” followed by “Tears” in August and “Toxic Marathon” in October. Her latest release “Ghost” is from January 26th, 2024.

Jaenna Cali is a Filipina-Canadian pop singer and songwriter from Vancouver, Canada with around 280 listeners on Spotify. She debuted on July 30th, 2021 with the single “Simply You” which is her most popular song with 22K streams on Spotify. Followed by her debut, she released “Standing By” on November 18th, 2021.
Her next single “i’m so done” was released on May 19th, 2022. She did not release any music throughout 2023. She came back on February 21st, 2024 with the single “Expiry Date” which is her latest release.
