YEDIRA, MFMF, YUJI & ASHEU RELEASE EP “CRYING IN THE SHOWER” [PRESS COVERAGE]

Today at midnight, Malaysian group MFMF released their debut EP crying in the shower which is in collaboration with Malaysian artists yuji, yedira and asheu. This 3-track R&B, Pop and Lo-fi infused EP is an emotional EP that tells the story of a relationship breaking down, through the lens of a problematic and passive-aggressive man.

SONG BREAKDOWN

1. oh no (feat. yuji)

“oh no (feat. yuji)” is a chill-R&B song that utilizes beautiful piano chords and sweet vocals by MFMF and yuji. With lyrics during the chorus such as; “Oh no, it’s the games you play / Oh no, it’s the words you say / Oh no I love it with the pain you bring, yeah”, we can tell that this song is telling a story of a relationship that is full of games that leaves the man confused.

When asked about the song, the artists said “[track 1 is] where he [the man] notices the start of his relationship crumbling and pleads for conversation.”

2. tick tock (feat. yedira)

“tick tock” (feat. yedira) is an R&B song that mixes elements of Lo-Fi because of the toy box instrument used. This song is definitely our favourite on the EP. This track highlights the denial stage of the man and how he is avoiding all the “red flags” essentially in this relationship because he just wants the relationship to continue without actually fixing it..

The artists say, “[track 2 is] where he desperately chooses avoidance and finds ways to weaponize accountability instead. [It’s] a song for those who ‘just want things back to normal’ without wanting to do any repair work”.

3. it’s you (love of my life) (feat. asheu)

“it’s you (love of my life) is an R&B song with elements of Pop. MFMF describes this song as the “delusional track”. This song is reminiscing about all of the moments in their relationship and he’s kind of asking himself “Was I good enough for you? / Be honest, be honest / What was I supposed to do?”.

When asked about the meaning of this song, the artists said “[this track is] where the protagonist gaslights the audience with his lullaby-like melodies, but his words reveal the end of their relationship where she has already moved on, but he’s still hung up on her”.

Overall, this EP is beautifully written and produced. It really captures every emotion that humans feel when they are in a relationship or situationship like this. We especially liked that it was told from the point of view of a passive-aggressive man who is really showing all sides of his emotions through these three tracks.

crying in the shower is now available to stream on all digital streaming platforms so, make sure to check out the EP here.
