Meet zeauk, also known as Zeus Rectra, who is an independent Filipino multi-talented artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He began his creative journey in 2016 and debuted on June 26th, 2018 with the single “RMB” which was in collaboration with zekke and Chinychon.
At midnight, zeauk released his first single of 2024 titled “4EVER” which is a Pop-R&B song. Behind The Beat had the opportunity to interview zeauk and discuss his musical journey, the meaning behind “4EVER”, future plans and more.
THE BEGINNING OF ZEAUK
Can you introduce yourself? What do you do?
zeauk: Hey there, pleasure to connect! I’m Zeus Rectra, but you might know me better by my stage moniker, zeauk (pronounced as “zook”). I wear a few hats in the creative world – I’m an independent Filipino recording artist and music producer, as well as a visual artist. Currently, I’m based in the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where inspiration flows as freely as the rainforest rhythms. It’s all about blending sounds and visuals to craft experiences that resonate with audiences near and far.
How did your musical journey begin?
zeauk: My musical journey kicked off in 2018 when my insatiable curiosity led me to delve into the art of songcraft. Before then, my focus was primarily on the visual realm – photography, videography, graphic design, you name it. However, my upbringing steeped in diverse musical genres, from R&B and Pop to Rap and Alternative, laid a solid foundation. Artists like Ne-Yo, Akon, Mario, and Justin Bieber left their mark on my musical palette.
Yet, it was the discovery of Korean R&B in 2016 and my ongoing love affair with K-Pop since 2011 that truly molded my sonic direction. Always the inquisitive spirit, I’ve made it a personal mission to explore myriad avenues of creative expression. For me, art isn’t confined to visual mediums alone; it’s also found in the melodies, rhythms, and lyrics that stir our souls.
Since stepping into the spotlight in 2018, I’ve embraced an independent approach, wearing multiple hats in the music-making process. From crafting beats and penning lyrics to orchestrating promotion and marketing strategies, I’ve been intimately involved in every facet of my musical journey.
I’m incredibly grateful that my vulnerability to express my feelings visually and musically has resonated with audiences not just locally, but internationally as well. Though they may not be numerous, each and every fan matters to me deeply. Their support fuels my drive to continually strive and grow, both as an artist and as a person.

What is the inspiration behind this song? / What is the meaning?
zeauk: In crafting “4EVER,” I delved deep into the raw emotions of love and commitment, pouring my heart and soul into every lyric and melody. The song is a testament to the overwhelming feeling of falling deeply for someone and realizing the irreplaceable presence they hold in your life.
From the candid verses to the whirlwind of emotions in the hook, “4EVER” captures the essence of love’s intensity. Each moment spent together feels timeless, slowing down as we hope for more. The pre-chorus speaks to the mesmerizing effect this person has on me, urging them to acknowledge our undeniable connection.

zeauk: In crafting “4EVER,” the production and writing process was deeply intertwined with my passion for Korean R&B, which has significantly shaped my new artistic sound. Influences from artists like Jay Park, keshi, and DPR Live guided me as I sought to blend their distinctive styles with my own unique flair, creating a sound that resonates on a profound level.
Throughout this creative journey, I infused elements of Korean R&B into every aspect of the song, from the smooth melodies to the emotive lyrics. These notable inspirations served as guiding lights, steering me toward a sound that felt both familiar and innovative.
Collaborating with talented professionals at Goldensound Studios and entrusting the mixing and mastering to Reckless Escapades ensured that the final product captured the essence of my vision. By combining these inspirations with my own artistic style, I crafted a song that stands out while paying homage to the genre that has deeply influenced me.
However, beyond its musical influences, “4EVER” holds a deeper meaning. It’s not just a declaration of love for a partner but a reflection of the transformative power of self-love. The lyrics speak to my personal journey of learning not just to love others, but also myself, recognizing that only through this journey could I truly commit to loving someone else unconditionally, for eternity.

Can you describe this song using a colour and why you chose that colour?
zeauk: If I were to describe “4EVER” using a color, I would choose yellow. Yellow exudes warmth, positivity, and happiness, which perfectly encapsulate the essence of the song. The color yellow symbolizes joy, optimism, and a sense of renewal, mirroring the uplifting and hopeful mood that “4EVER” evokes.
I chose yellow because it reflects the vibrant energy and passion infused within the song. It represents the bright moments shared with a loved one, the warmth of their presence, and the feeling of being enveloped in love and happiness.
Moreover, yellow can be seen in the artwork I designed for the song, complemented by lush green grass hills and a sofa in the middle. This imagery further reinforces the joyful and serene atmosphere that “4EVER” embodies.
Overall, yellow serves as the perfect representation of the emotions and themes conveyed in “4EVER,” making it the ideal color to describe this heartfelt and uplifting track.
What do you want your fans/listeners to feel and take away from “4EVER”?
zeauk: I want my fans and listeners to feel a sense of warmth, joy, and love when they listen to “4EVER.” I hope that the song resonates with them on a deep emotional level, evoking memories of cherished moments with their loved ones.

As an Asian musician, how has this influenced your experiences and challenges in navigating through the music industry and how do you see yourself as a representation for the Asian community in the music industry?
zeauk: As a Filipino artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, my journey in the music industry is colored by the richness of my cultural heritage and the vibrant tapestry of influences I’ve encountered living in Southeast Asia. Navigating the music scene here, I’ve found that being both Filipino and situated in Malaysia offers a unique vantage point from which to explore and innovate within the industry.
My music is a reflection of this fusion of cultures – drawing from the rhythmic cadences of Filipino music, the diverse soundscape of Malaysian culture, and even blending in influences from genres like Korean R&B. This eclectic mix not only sets my sound apart but also serves as a testament to the diversity and richness of Asian music.
In embracing these influences, I see myself not only as an artist but also as a cultural ambassador, showcasing the unique blend of traditions and sounds that make Asian music so distinct. By weaving together these disparate elements, I hope to offer a fresh perspective on what it means to be an Asian artist in today’s global music landscape.

FINDING HIS SOUND
How did you find your sound? And can you describe your general genre?
zeauk: Finding my sound has been a journey of self-discovery and experimentation. It’s been about exploring different musical influences, experimenting with various styles and genres, and ultimately, embracing what feels most authentic to me as an artist.
My sound is a fusion of various elements, drawing inspiration from genres like R&B, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. I’ve always been drawn to the emotive melodies and soulful rhythms of Korean R&B, which have had a significant influence on my music. At the same time, I incorporate elements of hip-hop and pop to create a contemporary and dynamic sound that resonates with listeners across different musical tastes.
Overall, I would describe my general genre as a blend of contemporary R&B and pop with elements of electronic production. My music is characterized by lush melodies, emotive lyrics, and infectious rhythms, creating an immersive and captivating listening experience.
However, I don’t limit myself to a specific genre or style. Instead, I’m constantly evolving and experimenting with new sounds and ideas, allowing my music to grow and evolve organically over time. This versatility and willingness to push boundaries are what define my sound and set me apart as an artist.
What is your favorite song from your discography so far? And for first time listeners, what song would you recommend them to listen to out of your discography?
zeauk: Choosing a favorite song from my discography is like picking a favorite child—it’s a tough decision! Each song holds a special place in my heart, representing different moments and experiences in my musical journey. However, if I had to choose, I would say that “4EVER” holds a particularly special significance for me.
“4EVER” encapsulates the essence of my artistic vision and represents a pivotal moment in my career. It’s a song that I poured my heart and soul into, drawing from personal experiences and emotions to create something truly authentic and heartfelt. zeauk: Listeners can expect an exciting journey ahead in 2024! I’m stoked to announce that there will be more music coming their way. I’m currently focused on expanding my fanbase and reaching new listeners, and I’m eager to share my upcoming projects with all of them.
While I can’t give away too many details just yet, I can promise that there are some incredible things in store. I’m working tirelessly behind the scenes to perfect my craft and deliver the best possible music for them to enjoy.
One thing I can hint at is the possibility of releasing my debut EP when the time is right. This will be a significant milestone for me as an artist, and I can’t wait to share this new chapter of my musical journey with all of my listeners.
In addition to new music, I’m also looking forward to getting back to performing live shows around the city eventually. There’s nothing quite like the energy of a live performance, and I can’t wait to connect with everyone in person once again.
For now, I’ll be releasing singles one by one, with each one offering a glimpse into what’s to come. “4EVER” is just the beginning, and I’m excited to unveil even more music for all of my listeners and fans to enjoy.
What is one country or place that you wish to perform in?
zeauk: Performing in Malaysia has been an incredible journey, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to share my music with audiences here. The support and enthusiasm from Malaysian fans have been nothing short of amazing, and I’ve cherished every moment spent performing on Malaysian stages.
However, as my fan base continues to grow and evolve, I’ve set my sights on a new goal: performing in the Philippines. Despite living in Malaysia for over a decade and considering it a second home, my heart still yearns for the chance to return to my roots and perform in the country where I was born and raised.
The Philippines holds a special significance for me, not only because it’s where I’m from but also because of its vibrant music scene and passionate audiences. While I’ve enjoyed performing in Malaysia multiple times, I’ve always harbored a deep desire to bring my music to Filipino fans.
With the support I’ve received from platforms like TikTok, where many of my followers are based in the Philippines, I believe the time is ripe to pursue this dream. I envision a future where I can perform for my Filipino fans, connecting with them on a deeper level and sharing the music that means so much to me.
So while I’m incredibly grateful for my experiences performing in Malaysia and consider it a privilege to call this country home, I’m also excited about the prospect of exploring new horizons and bringing my music to audiences in the Philippines when the time is right and my listenership has significantly grown. It’s a goal that fuels my passion for music and drives me to continue pushing forward in my musical journey.
